Selling or marketing is the very heart of a business. Without it, you do not have a business. A good marketing strategy can propel your business to success. It is essential for your business survival and growth.

You need to create an awareness to the public of your products or services. Here are some of the effective ways in marketing your business.

  • Good location - Everyone knows that location is the top most important concept in a business. Look for a place where there is a heavy traffic of people to target them as your customers. Depending on your type of business, a location can be a boon or a bane. This is especially true if you have a retail business. Some people also prefer locations which have parking spaces. Look for the best location.

  • Value your customers - Customers or clients are the lifeblood of a business. Your business survives because of them. Ask for their opinions, what they need, what they say about your products or services. Always smile. It is all worth your marketing budget. A satisfied customer can even market your business in your behalf for free thru word of mouth.

  • Accessibility - Besides location, you may want to have your business accessible communications-wise. That is, you need to install telephone lines, fax machines, and an internet website so that your customers can contact you in these mediums and can post an order instantly. That would mean another sales to you.

  • Business name - A good and smart business name is an advantage. Make it short and easy to remember. This is where ‘less is more’ appeals. At most, use business names with five syllables or less. The famous Kentucky Fried Chicken is more commonly known as the three letters “KFC.”

  • Promos - Have sales promos from time to time to keep your customers coming back. If you have a store with lots of products for sale, then why not have some sale promo in one of your products? Give huge discounts especially in peak seasons. In this way, when customers flock to your store because of the sales promo, they can also see your other products and be enticed to buy.

  • Giveaways - Christmas is fast approaching and one way to connect with your customers is through corporate giveaways! Call your customers and tell them that you have some giveaways because they are a loyal client of your business. In this way, they can instantly recall you especially if they no longer hear from or see you.

  • Store appearance - Make your business a pleasant place to shop in. Keep it clean and well-lit. You customers might think that you’re already closed if your lights are not on and you may lose potential clients. Also, cleanliness counts. A clean place and a clean product equals more sales. There’s a saying that cleanliness is next to godliness.

  • Little advertising - Make a nice sign board of your business so that they can easily notice it even at night. A business without a sign is a sign of no business. Spend some in enlisting your business in the Yellow Pages in telephone directories. Be sure they are in proper categories.

  • Business cards - It’s worthwhile to spend some in having your own business cards. It is a good way of promoting your business in your friends, relatives and acquaintances. You can also take advantage of free advertising by posting your business cards in church and community bulletin boards, supermarkets and other stores. I remembered there was a bulletin board in the hostel when we went to Singapore. Post that business card on it!

  • Product packaging - Let your product speak for itself. Good packaging sells your product. Make your product look more presentable so it can grab customers’ attention. Be innovative and creative in presenting your product. There is a study that red sells. The human eye easily spots a red dot in a room full of multi-colored dots. That’s the reason why a product with a red tag or label sells more pieces than others. Do not over emphasize it though.

Effective marketing is a way to propel your business to success. Ask your friends or relatives for other ideas on how to effectively market your business.
