Entrepreneurship is Innovation
There are lots of definition for the word entrepreneur. Some, they say that they were already entrepreneurs once they sold products in street or with others, they just inherited a business from their fellow entrepreneur. If you have a business, will you be automatically be called an entrepreneur?
This has to be clearly defined, because these are the people who will lift this dear country of ours from poverty. From various definitions, the concept of entrepreneurship is INNOVATION.
It is a new or a different way of doing things. When a person creates a new way, product or system… that is innovation. If there’s something new a way a product is created, presented or marketed, then that’s innovation.
So, if you have innovated something or have come up with something new (in the context of business)… you are an entrepreneur.
This would mean that if you just copied a business system or franchised a business, lets say; a hardware business or a restaurant. It is not entrepreneurship but just purely business. But if you thought of sending agents to offer your hardware goods or started delivering food instead of just wait for customers, then you are most likely an entrepreneur. To be part of that something new also makes you an entrepreneur.
An entrepreneur is a person who innovates. The person is a risk taker because he is always the bench mark, starter, and the beginnings of his ideas. He also invests his sources to the idea he has come up with. He has unique ideas, new ways or he turns bad things to good ones! He either makes something new from something which already exists or simply comes up with something from nothing.
In bible, the first chapter and first verse says, “in the beginning”… God created. The word “created” in Hebrew is “BARA”, which means to make something out of nothing. Human beings can only “make” not create… meaning to make something out of something. Example: We make pineapple juice (from pineapple). But God created the fruit pineapple. So, my context here using the word “create is make”.
These features gives the man an advantage. He is very creative; he has new ways to sell things. People in Pampanga where there is an abundance of lahar (volcanic ashes as a result of Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1990s) are very innovative! Why? Because while it is true that every people can just get tons of lahars from the roads for free, they molded it into figurines and sold it to tourists to make money.
Who are entrepreneurs?
He is the guy who thought of selling SAGO !
IMAGINE!
We have been drinking gulaman since we were kids at P1.00 per glass. The entrepreneur repackaged the drink, added a straw, a fancy glass, added more ice , started selling it at P25.00 and called it “ZAGU”. Hurray!
Have you seen the ice cream that is being cooked? It ads flavor to the buyer! They do not buy the ice cream; they buy the entertainment when the ice cream is being cooked!
It is those who changed the presentation, style of eating and buying food. It’s the same banana, but presented in a different cup…
He is the guy who brought to you HOME delivery Pizza and food! Frozen taho, tacos, burgers etc. He thought of networking and created the system around it. He turned basic advertising to revolutionize advertising.
He is the one who idealized a unique way of advertising where ads are being placed on placemats of restaurants. He is the guy with a water refilling station business in your backyard that because of competition, he innovated ideas such as wearing a batman or superman suit when delivering water jugs to the neighborhood so that the kids who will see them will be entertained and will tell their moms or dads to get water from that company!
Mommy! I will take a bath 3 times a day! Says a young kid who loves a restaurant. Why? What’s the connection between a soap and burger? None! But the entrepreneur made a connection.
A concert, a spa treatment and a hair shampoo? There’s none… but it’s free if you get a sachet of the hair shampoo… That’s why there are lot of promos going on that you may win a concert, a car, etc. if you buy a sachet of shampoo. Again the connection between shampoo and a concert? None! But the entrepreneurs made a connection.
INNOVATION!
Copying a business doesn’t make you an entrepreneur. It makes you into a selfish business person. Dig inside of you and you’ll see a million and one ideas how to innovate things. Besides, if an idea came from you, you will cherish it and put your whole heart into it. You will support it all the way.
We are an entrepreneurial country! The best networkers in the world! Most of entrepreneurs in the Philippines belong to the micro or small business categories. They were the vendors, retail store owners, service business… Until there’s innovation, creativity, risk taking, there will be entrepreneurs.
An entrepreneur also has a heart to produce jobs and employment. We have to admit, our goal is profit… But aside from profit being a goal, an entrepreneur desires to see his fellow men have a source of income. He produces jobs for people.
Unemployment is the biggest problem of our country today. This is the biggest problem of Filipinos nowadays. There are lots of jobseekers but no available jobs for them. If you don’t have a job, then that’s a great problem. People will then look for other illegal means to sustain their basic needs - there robbers, carnappers, kidnappers, snatchers, shop lifters, etc.
As you read this, start to dream. Dream of yourself as an entrepreneur, owning an enterprise hiring people, providing jobs for people who are in need.
Be an entrepreneur, dig inside of your creative mind.
There is an idea in you… take the risk, innovate.
