Marriage and Money

Marriage and Money

Admit it or not but in today’s generation, a lot of people have considered financial stability as one criteria in marriage. Practically speaking, who doesn’t want to have a comfortable life anyway? Most often, women want to marry men who are financially stable for a secured future. Here in the Philippines, it is very common to see Filipina women looking for foreigners to marry through chatting in their hopes to uplift their lives.

When marriage is set in a scenario when there’s a huge difference between assets of husbands and wives, sometimes prenuptial agreements happen before marriage to avoid monetary interests. Once a marriage is completed with all the necessary papers signed, assets of both husbands and wives are considered conjugal.

Having said that, I’d like to share to you a story of a young and pretty lady who posted a question on a popular forum that asks: “What Should I do to Marry A Rich Guy?” which goes:

I’m going to be honest of what I’m going to say here. I’m 25 this year. I’m very pretty, have style and good taste. I wish to marry a guy with $500k annual salary or above.

You might say that I’m greedy, but an annual salary of $1M is considered only as middle class in New York.

My requirement is not high. Is there anyone in this forum who has an income of $500k annual salary? Are you all married?

I wanted to ask: what should I do to marry rich persons like you?

Among those I’ve dated, the richest is $250k annual income, and it seems that this is my upper limit.

If someone is going to move into high cost residential area on the west of New York City Garden, $250k annual income is not enough.

I’m here humbly to ask a few questions:

1) Where do most rich bachelors hang out? (Please list down the names and addresses of bars, restaurant, gym)
2) Which age group should I target?
3) Why most wives of the riches are only average-looking? I’ve met a few girls who don’t have looks and are not interesting, but they are able to marry rich guys.
4) How do you decide who can be your wife, and who can only be your girlfriend? (my target now is to get married)

Ms. Pretty

Apparently, a reply came in from a CEO of JP Morgan describing the difference between beauty versus money:

Dear Ms. Pretty,

I have read your post with great interest. Guess there are lots of girls out there who have similar questions like yours. Please allow me to analyse your situation as a professional investor.

My annual income is more than $500k, which meets your requirement, so I hope everyone believes that I’m not wasting time here. From the standpoint of a business person, it is a bad decision to marry you. The answer is very simple, so let me explain.

Put the details aside, what you’re trying to do is an exchange of “beauty” and “money” : Person A provides beauty, and Person B pays for it, fair and square.

However, there’s a deadly problem here, your beauty will fade, but my money will not be gone without any good reason. The fact is, my income might increase from year to year, but you can’t be prettier year after year.

Hence from the viewpoint of economics, I am an appreciation asset  and you are a depreciation asset. It’s not just normal depreciation, but exponential depreciation. If that is your only asset, your value will be much worse 10 years later.

By the terms we use in Wall Street, every trading has a position, dating with you is also a “trading position”. If the trade value dropped, we will sell it and it is not a good idea to keep it for long term – same goes with the marriage that you wanted. It might be cruel to say this, but in order to make a wiser decision any assets with great depreciation value will be sold or “leased”.

Anyone with over $500k annual income is not a fool; we would only date you, but will not marry you. I would advice that you forget looking for any clues to marry a rich guy. And by the way, you could make yourself to become a rich person with $500k annual income. This has better chance than finding a rich fool.

Hope this reply helps. If you are interested in “leasing” services, do contact me.

J.P. Morgan CEO…

While physical looks is considered an asset in a person, it can be subject to exponential depreciation as the CEO has just said. The greatest assets I consider in my would-be wife in the future are attitude and intelligence as I believe that every man’s success is a woman behind him. Two heads are always better than one.

Marriage should be bounded by love and not money. Look for spouse that is considered as an asset not only on the physical and financial well-being but also on some other aspects. Someone who will be there through thick and thin to support you and to give you a helping hand in whatever situation you may be. Someone who is not only considered as a husband or wife but as a friend as well. After all, a power couple can achieve great success in life once they have a common goal.

    • Great story! This is exactly why there’s such a thing called the pre-nuptial agreement stating the terms and conditions of marriage relating to the ownership of properties.

Ms Pretty is one of those people responsible for its invention! 🙂

I realize something in this article: If you have wealth anyone want/will do anything to marry you in order to get the piece of the action. But what that person forget to recognize is the long hours one put at the office, dealing with all kind of customers with all kinds of attitudes and so forth…
I owned my own business: this gentle from Philippine, his attending undergrad educational/school he want to become a doctor one day. Yet he want me to finance his educations, what he have forget to realized I worked hard all of my life to get where I am at and I also work 2 job’s put myself to school with no families nor anyone help. I learned when you have wealth people will pretend to be your friends, loves you or do things for you. But when you have nothing they look at you worst than dirt and act like they do not know you. I am a self-made millionaire, I went from nothing to wealth its all because I have a desire to change my life and want something better and greater for me, myself & I and I want to do it on my own for me and my future. Someone like Mr. Pretty and this guy who want me to finance his education are the kind of people/person wealthy people stay heck away from.
